Bauke Meersman (be)
Bauke Meersman is a Belgian jazz musician known for his innovative approach to minimalist music. Using circular breathing techniques, he creates meditative suites on saxophone and bass clarinet – at times playing both instruments simultaneously. His compositions, often built on irregular meters and layered repetition, result in an immersive and evocative listening experience.
His music is frequently described as industrial jazz, evoking the atmosphere of workers’ cafés and industrial taverns. In performance, Meersman aims to construct a spatial soundscape that sparks the listener’s imagination, balancing compositional precision with a strong human element.
Currently, Meersman is developing both solo projects and collaborations with other musicians, including Owen Perry Weston, Giovanni Barcella and Zonatan Dembele. In the past, he performed for five years with Parisian pianist Ludovic Signolet, who himself collaborated with Marion Brown – one of the saxophonists on John Coltrane’s Ascension.
Bauke Meersman has performed at various venues and festivals, including Dunk! Festival at Kunstencentrum 404, Jazz Leuven Festival, and the Lotto Brussels Jazz Weekend. His music has also been broadcast on national radio, including the jazz program So What?! on Radio Klara.
His debut album, Bauke Meersman, will be released on vinyl at the end of 2025; the digital release is set for October 30th.
